Desert Orchid will be a significant attraction at this evening's Kilbeggan meeting when the flying grey leads the runners out for the featured Elan Midlands National. The ever popular former Gold Cup winner is in Ireland to raise funds for the Cherry Orchard Equine Centre project in Ballyfermot and while some unkind souls might suggest the 18-year-old could carry some of tonight's runners on his back and still beat them, someone has to win the lion's share of the £10,000 pot and the suspicion is that it could well be Ryhane.
Feathered Gale's Killarney success after a layoff proved that Arthur Moore's string are on good terms with themselves, and although Ryhane hasn't run since mid-May, it should be no barrier to his chances.
That run was at Killarney when a relatively disappointing third to Una's Choice, but a better indicator of his ability came previously at Listowel when easily beating Cristy's Picnic and at Fairyhouse in April when winning a handicap by a distance. Tonight he looks to have a nice weight and against some very average opponents, looks worth a bet.
Michael Hourigan has a good record at the Co Westmeath track, and if Fair Society puts in a clear round in the Permak Handicap Hurdle, she must hold a good chance on a course on which she is proven.
Fair Society only made it to the sixth flight at Killarney on Wednesday when starting favourite before stopping at the hurdle and unseating her young rider, Paul Hourigan. Compensation looks in line here.
Attack At Dawn can continue Sean Treacy's fine recent run in the opening Naprelan Maiden Hurdle, and Red Square could prove best of a poor lot in the Tom McCormack Maiden Hurdle. Innovative ran fourth on the flat at Killarney on Tuesday but should find the Verelan Handicap Hurdle more to his taste.
