Dublin IT 1-14 UCD 0-14:BOTH Dublin outfits progressed to the quarter-final stage of the Fitzgibbon Cup after an entertaining Group B encounter at Mobhi Road yesterday.
DIT may have clinched their first win from three group fixtures, but they deservedly claimed their place in the last eight with this display.
UCD had led by 0-3 to 0-2 when DIT bagged a crucial goal to take control of proceedings.
Paul Ryan forced the ball home from a matter of yards after a lethal dropping ball sent in by Willie O’Dwyer in the 12th minute.
Dublin hurling manager Anthony Daly was an interested spectator with many of his current panel on display and the standard of hurling produced will attest to the competitiveness of his squad members.
UCD edged proceedings by 0-9 to 1-5 at the break.
But DIT always edged proceedings after the break and only a brilliant stop by goalkeeper Jamie Ryan denied Peter Kelly a second DIT goal in the 37th minute.
The quality free-taking of UCD’s Liam Rushe and DIT’s Paul Ryan ensured neither side established a substantial lead and both will enter the knockout stages confident of making an impact.
