Ireland lose third-place playoff to finish fourth at Singapore Sevens

The Ireland men's sevens team has finished fourth at the Singapore Sevens event, the second time in succession they have finished that high at a World Series event after January's tournament in Seville.

Following a historic day on Saturday when the side defeated Fiji for the first time, Sunday began with a victory over the USA in the cup quarter-finals. Jordan Conroy added to his four tries scored on day one to go alongside a Hugo Lennox effort, while conversions from Lennox and Billy Dardis ultimately proved to be the difference in a 12-14 win.

Progression to the semi-finals earned a clash with New Zealand. Despite Conroy’s first minute score - bringing his total for the weekend to six - the Kiwis responded with four tries of their own, including a late Akuila Rokolisoa winner to set up a final date with Fiji.

Ireland went into the bronze medal clash but ended up on the wrong side of a tight 21-19 scoreline. Lennox, Gavin Mullin and Andrew Smith crossed for the Irish scores.
