PETER LYONS, John Hallissey and Jeremy Lyons gave the most eye catching performances for Ireland in this triangular representative meeting for developing athletes at the Morton Stadium, Santry, last night.
Jeremy Lyons produced an impressive piece of sustained running to breeze to victory over compatriot David Keohane in the 400 metres hurdles in a respectable 42.90 seconds. Not satisfied with this for an evening's work, he also gained valuable points for Ireland by coming in third in the 110m hurdles. Here, Canada's Jason Cave broke the tape in 15.1 seconds, just ahead of Ireland's Trevor McGlenn.
For his part John Hallissey vaulted 4.91m to take maximum points from Canada's Richard Sidley with Peter McLoughlin providing Hallissey with good support in third.
In the 400m flat, Peter Lyons scorched a trail to the tape with a comfortable win over fellow countryman Damian Lowery and Liam Francis of Canada. This helped to drive Ireland to a convincing win. In the end they had 22 points to spare over Canada.
In the women's section, matters were much tighter. Although Ireland emerged victorious again, Canada's competitors won more events. It was Ireland's strength in depth that saw them through with regular second and third placings. Notwithstanding this, Niamh McGlynn did show a clear pair of heels to the other competitors in the 100m and she was Ireland's most impressive female athlete on the night.
