Roscommon 1-12 Lietrim 0-8 A last-misnute effort by Seamus Quinn in front of an empty net which went narrowly wide summed up a frustrating afternoon for a youthful and combative Leitrim who were beaten by a stronger and better organised Roscommon in the second round of Connacht Football League matches, at Kilglass yesterday.
Both teams should be complimented for the standard of play on a slippery surface that cut up badly as the game progressed. Roscommon's strength and experience were the decisive factors.
The visitors scored first with a fourth-minute pointed free by Padraig McLoughlin, their top scorer on the day. Three minutes later Roscommon were gifted a penalty when Nigel Dineen was fouled by James Phelan and Derek Moran converted.
Moran had a second Roscommon penalty in the 13th minute but his effort hit the post and was gathered by Gareth Phelan in the Leitrim goal.
Leitrim finished the half in impressive fashion tacking on three points to leave the half-time score 1-6 to 0-6 in favour of the home side.
Roscommon maintained their dominance in the second half, after scoring first through Moran. Leitrim found little room to manoeuvre against a free-flowing Roscommon attack and were pinned in their own half for much of the second half, managing just one point from play.
