Manchester United lost a penalty shoot-out 4-1 after drawing 1-1 with Inter Milan in last night's Pirelli Cup clash in the San Siro. Nicky Butt gave United a 15th-minute lead, but a Gary Neville own goal 20 minutes from time brought Inter level on a night when Ronaldo made his long-awaited debut for the Italian giants.

Some 50,000 of the Inter faithful turned up to watch the Brazilian ace, who played for the opening 17 minutes before making way for Chilean striker Ivan Zamorano.

Inter, who lost the UEFA Cup final on penalties, kept the trophy they won last season after Jordi Cruyff and Butt both missed their penalties for United, and French midfielder Benoit Cauet drove home the winner.

Ronaldo, whose world record £18 million transfer wrangle with Barcelona should be settled next week, was the man that everyone had come to see.

But the biggest applause, and a standing ovation, came eight minutes from time for the arrival of Nigerian Nwankwo Kanu, who had heart surgery in the United States last November and was never expected to play again.
