WHILE most attention was on the final race in the Mid Eastern Region's league on the circuit behind Dublin airport on Saturday, the programme of under age events provided additional interest and Stephen Roche's son Nicolas was first in the under 12 category.

After finishing second and fourth in his first outings at Clane and the Phoenix Park in the previous weeks, young Roche did not have long to wait for his first visit to the winner's enclosure and all the family were there for the occasion - his father presented the prizes afterwards.

The circuit was 4.8 miles and the under 12s did three laps, at the end of which Roche led the way ahead of John Kenna and Andrew McQuaid.

The last of nine races in the league was over eight laps of the circuit and although Pat Moriarty won from Dave Garland with Scott Hamilton third, Keith Bannon held an unbeatable lead with 43 points. Bannon was still constantly at the head of the main group chasing after breakaways but he was unplaced in the final sprint to the line.
