FRANCE V ENGLANDBOBBY ROBSON is urging new England manager Fabio Capello to drop Ashley Cole as punishment for his "unacceptable" behaviour on the pitch for Chelsea against Tottenham.
Cole's tackle on Spurs defender Alan Hutton in the 4-4 draw at White Hart Lane last Wednesday resulted in a yellow card and, more controversially, an apparent disregard by the England defender for what referee Mike Riley was telling him.
Former England coach Robson thinks Cole's elimination from this week's friendly against France would be a fair response. Robson said: "I would be happy to see an England team line up against France without Ashley Cole. It would hammer home the message that what he did was unacceptable."
Meanwhile, on the team front a back injury has forced goalkeeper Chris Kirkland to withdraw from Capello's squad. West Ham's Robert Green is added to the party to travel to Paris for Wednesday's friendly. Green becomes the second goalkeeper to be added to the squad, with Tottenham's Paul Robinson called up following an injury to Aston Villa's on-loan Liverpool man Scott Carson.
Capello reduced his squad yesterday by dropping Jermaine Jenas and Shaun Wright-Phillips from his provisional list of players to take to Stade de France. Gabriel Agbonlahor, Ashley Young, Jermain Defoe and David Wheater also missed out - with Carson, Matthew Upson and now Kirkland ruled out through injury.
As for Robinson, his recall marks a huge change in fortunes for the 28-year-old.
Robinson was dropped from the Spurs team earlier in the season and spent 10 games on the sidelines before returning just before his club's League Cup triumph at Wembley.
The former Leeds United goalkeeper was first choice in the previous regime until the final game of Steve McClaren's reign when Carson was preferred against Croatia, with England missing out on a place in this summer's European Championship finals.
