RAIN AGAIN prevented players completing the third round of the waterlogged Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio, yesterday and officials decided to try to complete the round today and make it a 54 hole event.
The third round was interrupted twice on Saturday, and resumed at 2.30 p.m. yesterday. The rain returned less than two hours later, flooding the course and halting play.
The leaders, Scott Hoch and Vijay Singh, were tied at 12 under par after 10 holes. Greg Norman was a stroke behind at 11 under after 14 holes.
More rain is forecast for today. If the water saturated course makes conditions unplayable, the tournament will revert to 36 holes, and second round leader Hoch will be declared the winner. Hoch stood at 12 under par after 36 holes, two shots better than Tommy Tolles.
Though the Memorial is traditionally rain plagued, with just one completely dry week in 22 years, the last Memorial to be reduced to 54 holes was in 1990, won by Norman.
. Ian Woosnam claimed his second title in a week by defeating Sandy Lyle in a sudden death play off in the Hyundai Masters in Seoul yesterday.
Both players made pars at the first extra hole of sudden death. Then both hit approach shots to within 15 feet on the second extra hole, but Woosnam converted his putt to claim the winner's crown.
