Prospects for today's meetings looked bright yesterday as mild weather swept across Britain following a weekend of sharp frost and snow.

Yesterday's meeting at Fakenham was abandoned due to snow following a 7.30a.m. inspection - the first National Hunt fixture of the current season to be lost because of cold weather.

Sedgefield will hold a 7.30a.m. inspection this morning to determine whether today's meeting can go ahead.

A spokeswoman for the County Durham track said: "At the moment there is still frost in the ground so we will hold an inspection at 7.30 in the morning to see if we can race.

"The temperature is due to rise tonight so hopefully by morning the frost will have gone and we will be able to race."

Fontwell and Huntingdon both reported no problems for today's fixtures.

Hexham, due to stage a meeting tomorrow, will hold a precautionary inspection at 2.30p.m.

Saeed bin Suroor received two awards at the annual Horserace Writers' and Photographers' Association luncheon in London yesterday. At the 1998 Derby Awards, bin Suroor was voted Flat Trainer of the Year and International Trainer of the Year.
