The third division of the Ballymore Maiden Hurdle at Punchestown yesterday provided 20-year-old Robert Power with his first success on only his third mount in public.
Partnering the Jessica Harrington-trained Younevertoldme, Power showed the experience that had brought him many honours show-jumping and eventing as he got some superb jumps from the mare to hold off Ruby Walsh aboard the favourite King's Deal in the colours of leading owner J P McManus.
Power only returned to Ireland a couple of months ago after riding for two years in the top echelon of show-jumping in Britain and he has already applied to turn professional.
Ballyamber, who has been campaigned exclusively over fences this season without success, showed his appreciation for a return to the smaller obstacles when proving an easy winner of the Panoramic Restaurant Maiden Hurdle in the hands of Walsh.
Valiramix laid down the gauntlet to reigning Champion Hurdler Istabraq with an impressive nine-length victory over The French Furze in the Bula Hurdle at Newbury yesterday. Valiramix is now second favourite for the hurdlers' crown in March.
