EILEEN ROSE POWER spear heads the Irish challenge as the second qualifying round of the British Women's Amateur Open golf championship gets underway at Royal Liverpool this morning.
The 28 year old from Kilkenny fired a superb two under par 72 to lie in second place, three strokes behind the leader, Kelli Kuehme, the American amateur champion from Dallas.
Some fine iron approach work was mainly responsible for Power's excellent performance. She birdied the opening hole, after chipping to within three feet of the stick on her way to an outward 36. But she started for home indifferently, dropping strokes at the 10th after driving into rough and the short 13th following a bunkered tee shot.
But then came a sensational spell she birdied the next four holes, before pulling her drive at the last to drop a stroke.
Rossmore's Michelle McGreevy was the only other Irish player to beat 80. She posted a 79, but knows that another round like that today will almost certainly be good enough to take her into the knockout phase.
