Potentate was dubbed "Mr Versatile" by Martin Pipe's son David when he pulled out all the stops to land the featured Mid Season Chase at muddy Wincanton yesterday.
"Hurdles and fences, they all come alike to him and it doesn't matter if it's two miles over hurdles or longer trips over fences, this horse really is Mr Versatile," said Pipe junior.
Potentate has landed the Welsh Champion Hurdle for the past three seasons and this was his fourth success chasing.
His task was made easier by the first fence departure of favourite Kates Charm, and another fancied rival Andsuephi hit the deck at the 10th, but that took nothing away from the eight-year-old.
Rodi Greene kept Potentate's head in front as he was challenged up the home straight to get the better of Bouchasson by a length and a quarter.
