PEMBROKE...2 GLENANNE...0In regaining the Leinster Senior Cup with a 2-0 victory at Grange Road yesterday, the pendulum has swung back remarkably in favour of Pembroke Wanderers in their intense rivalry with Glenanne.
Not only is this a rebuilding season for Pembroke but injuries to leading figures (the latest being Ronan Gormley) caused Simon Filgas to field a most assorted side in yesterday's final.
Yet, with Paddy Conlon (just back from duty with Scotland in Cairo) leading the attack with gusto and Devin Donnelly as the mature bulwark of a defence in which Byron Dunne was especially positive, Glenanne were repulsed after a more assertive start.
So, undaunted, Pembroke drove in front early in the second half when Simon Kershaw, who played astutely throughout, found the target from a short-corner switch.
Dougie Good went close to increasing the lead but then came a period of fierce Glenanne pressure with much pride at stake.
Graham Shaw and John Goulding tore at the Pembroke cover and Glenanne came close, notably, to forcing a penalty stroke when a drag flick by Joe Brennan was claimed to have hit a defender's shoulder on the line.
But the siege was lifted and Pembroke broke away in the last minute for Maurice Elliott to net a centre from Alan Giles.
So, in beating Glenanne for the second time in three days (it was 1-0 in Saturday's league game), Wanderers carried off the Mills trophy for the fifth time in six seasons.
Of course, after the success of the women's team earlier in the day, it was a double to merit much celebration, not least for the club's husband and wife team, Nigel and Katherine Henderson.
Although the sun was fading, one more trophy remained to be won, the Benny Atkinson Cup, which Corinthians under-16s captured stylishly in a 3-1 victory over the Pembroke juniors.
Scott Evans, Peter Yates and Ivar Billfalk-Kelly scored for the winners with Alan Sothern replying from a penalty. There were some fine saves by both goalkeepers, the busier Stephen O'Keeffe for Pembroke and Ross Gribben of Corinthians, who kept out a point-blank shot by Tim Hill.
