THE US Open champion Corey Pavin picked up his first win of the season at Fort Worth, Texas yesterday, capturing the $1.5 million Colonial tournament by two strokes from Jeff Sluman.

Pavin, who won this tournament in 1985 and was runner-up twice, earned his 14th career victory with a one-under-par 69 for eight-under 272.

Sluman closed with a 68 to finish at six-under. Rocco Mediate, who had a one-stroke lead over Pavin entering the final round, shot a closing 73 to finish third.

Bob Murphy took the seniors' £650,000 NFL Classic at Clifton, New Jersey by two strokes thanks to a three-under-par final round of 69. Murphy's 202 total - 14 under - was three strokes better than George Archer's record for 54 holes set last year at the Upper Montclair Country Club.

The 53-year-old Murphy, who won the PGA Thunderbird Classic on this course in 1968, became the ninth player to win both a PGA Tour and a senior PGA event on the same course.
