A dramatic comeback by Ulster snatched the Interprovincial title from Leinster at Enniscrone yesterday. When Leinster won the morning foursomes by 2-1 with the other match halved, it looked ominous for challengers Ulster - even more so when Walker Cup cap Paddy Gribben lost the top singles to in-form Gary Cullen but the Ulstermen showed their fighting qualities by staging a mid-afternoon revival.
It was Stuart Paul, the only player to finish with a 100 per cent record, and Graeme McDowell who got the foursomes result for Ulster with Garth McGimpsey holing a five-footer on the home green for the half which, in the end, proved invaluable.
Cullen's great win was offset when Michael Hoey inflicted the first defeat of the week on Noel Fox with the Shandon Park 20year-old making birdies at the 13th and 14th holes to leap ahead. Fox then failed to get up and down at the 16th and 17th as Hoey struck a vital blow for Ulster.
Still, when the overall situation stood at 5-2 for Leinster and Justin Kehoe moving sweetly in the anchor role, the holders seemed to have the title in their sights again. It was then that the Ulstermen sprung to life. Garth McGimpsey, Irish champion Ciaran McMonagle and Graeme McDowell posted wins to level matters.
UCD student Kehoe, as expected, handed in a 4 and 3 win over David Jones but Stuart Paul provided the crucial blow for Ulster. He came back from two down on the 12th tee to beat Gavin McNeill 2 and 1 and give Ulster a share of the 13 points on offer yesterday. That was enough to send the honours north on a countback - Ulster having collected 25 points to Leinster's 22 1/2.
"I have not been beaten in a singles match when playing with Ulster for the past three years," revealed Paul, who has yet to gain a senior international cap. Ulster have now 15 wins to Leinster's 14. Munster took third place and Connacht fourth.
