THE seasonal Three Wise Men awards in the Forte Hotels Legends in Sport Awards were presented yesterday to hurlers Ray Cummins, Tony Doran and Eddie Keher. Amongst the previous winners are George Best, Vincent O'Brien and Jimmy Kenveney.
This year's winners were all prominent in the 1960s and '70s, and are loosely linked by a 20th anniversary of the year that Cummins captained Cork to the All-Ireland final, where they played Wexford, who were captained by Doran, whereas Keher was top scorer for Kilkenny during their successful National League campaign.
Cummins was a celebrated dual player who won an All-Ireland football medal in 1973, to go with four equivalent awards in hurling. He was the only dual All Star in history, in 1971.
Doran was on what was, up to this year, the last Wexford team to win an All-Ireland, in 1968. He also won All-Irelands at minor and under-21 levels before completing the collection in 1989, at the age of 42, when his club, Buffer's Alley won the All-Ireland club title.
Keher won six All-Irelands as well as appearing in finals in three decades. He played in both the minor final of 1959 and the senior replay a month later.
