FRANKIE DETTORI, showing no ill effects of Saturday's fall at Sha Tin in Hong Kong, yesterday received yet another award to mark his achievement of riding seven winners in a day at Ascot on September 28th.

Dettori, who took third place in the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year competition on Sunday night, yesterday received a Waterford Crystal Special Achievement Award from John Hacket, representing the company.

The Italian spoke of his lucky escape in Hong Kong, saying his horse Magic Power clipped the heels of a horse in front of him.

"As we stumbled another horse bumped into us and I couldn't escape," said Dettori.

"I was very lucky not to hit the rail and that the other horses didn't run over me.

"Unfortunately my horse broke a leg and had to be destroyed. At least I am here to tell the tale."

Dettori, who was 26 on Sunday spoke of his delight at "finishing in the frame" at the BBC Award ceremony.

"It's been a year of highs and lows," he said. "The highs were fantastic and the lows with the suspensions and injuries, disappointing," he said.

Dettori was banned for his use of the whip on Mark of Esteem when successful in the 2000 Guineas and again after giving Shantou a powerful ride to win the St Leger.

"But that beautiful day at Ascot made up for that and overall it's been a fantastic year."

Dettori now plans a trip to South Africa with his manager Peter Burrell before flying on to Australia in mid-January for the international jockey challenge.
