Kyle McCallan (Former Ireland international cricket captain)
Club: Tandragee GC, Armagh
Handicap: 12
1 What’s your favourite tournament (amateur or professional) and why?
The British Open because I like to see professionals struggling to put a score together just like us amateurs. When you watch golf in the States it is like target golf, I like to see them struggle on a good links course.
2 Best TV golf memory?
Darren Clarke, Ryder Cup 2006, The K Club. Simple as that. Simply sensational, can’t say any more than that.
3 Parkland or links? Why?
Parkland because links golf just destroys me. I don’t hit the ball straight enough and it’s more punishing on a links, plus the fast greens crucify me as I’ve a touch like an elephant.
4 What’s your hidden gem of a course and why?
Moyola Park, just remember it as being quite a nice wee course, nothing fancy but very enjoyable. Some lovely holes.
5 How would you deal with someone you suspected of cheating? Would you sign their card?
If playing in an official competition and I suspected someone, I’d probably just tackle them on it there and then. Say if they’re employing the old foot wedge, I would have to be quite blunt about it and call them on it. You would hate to do it but you can’t turn a blind eye.
6 If you could introduce one rule, how would you combat slow play?
Anything more than a double bogey then you should pick the ball up and move on.
7 Has equipment technology had a detrimental effect on genuine talent/ability?
If so, what changes would you make?
I’m happy enough with the changes, it’s made the game easier, but courses are changing to allow for greater length. For recreational golfers like myself I have no issue with technological advances with equipment. It enhances your enjoyment of the game.
8 150 yards from the hole, what’s in your hands?
Eight-iron. Mind you some days I’d be better off using a putter!
9 Fashion stakes – Pringle or J Lindeberg?
Lindeberg. It’s just more fashionable and trendy with those nice belts. Pringle was your Colin Montgomerie and that run, definitely not.
10 More comfortable paying for price of a pint or ProV ball?
ProV every time.
11 Who is the greatest – Jack Nicklaus or Tiger Woods? Other?
Tiger Woods for what he has achieved so young. I know he’s blotted his copy book.
12 If you had one final round, who would be in fourball and where?
Has to be Augusta with Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer in their prime. Might just have to lie about my handicap and forget my GUI card.
