COLLEGES GAA CORN UÍ MHUIRI FINAL Coláiste Na Sceilge 2-8 Inter School Killorglin 2-7AFTER A game dictated by a strong wind, the Jack O'Connor-trained Coláiste Na Sceilge just hung on at Dr Crokes, Killarney, yesterday. O'Connor has now contested four Corn Uí Mhuiri finals since Coláiste Na Sceilge entered the competition in 2000 and he has won all four.
His son, Eanna, played a crucial role with a stunning goal three minutes into the second-half. In fact Na Sceilge’s goals on either side of half-time decided this contest. Inter School Killorglin, who fought back from being six points adrift after 10 minutes of the second-half, will rue three wides in the final 10 minutes.
IS Killorglin, with the wind, got off to a dream start when Pa Joy put Brendan Delaney through and he found the net after one minute. Ian Galvin responded for the South Kerry side with a point but Killorglin were on top in the middle through Jack Sherwood and two quick points from Micheal O’Shaughnessy and Jerome Flynn had them in a strong position.
However, Killorglin didn’t score from the sixth to the 23rd minute as Na Sceilge’s Niall O’Shea and Damian Kelly landed points.
Patrick Kilkenny was curbing Eanna O’Connor but on the stroke of half-time Na Sceilge struck as Stephen O’Dwyer put Galvin through for a goal and Na Sceilge led 1-4 to 1-3 at the interval.
Na Sceilge exploded into action on the restart and Eanna O’Connor kicked a fine point before he fetched a high centre and planted the ball in the net. Two further points from O’Dwyer and O’Shea saw Na Sceilge pull 2-7 to 1-4 clear by the 40th minute. However, when Killorglin’s Gavin O’Grady goaled it was game on.
Killorglin’s Ed O’Sullivan kicked a 45th-minute point, then came three wides in a row and pointed frees from Flynn and O’Grady closed the gap to a single point with two minutes left. Na Sceilge kicked two wides themselves but hung on to win.
