NEWS ROUND-UP:WEXFORD: Good Counsel College teacher Aidan O'Brien has been unveiled as the new Wexford senior football manager.

The Adamstown clubman, a native of Westmeath, takes over from Jason Ryan who resigned after five years in charge of the county.

O’Brien has coached Good Counsel College to All-Ireland Colleges senior football success, while he has also been prominent at club level, having enjoyed county success with Horeswood in senior football.

He is no stranger to intercounty management as he managed Wexford’s under-21 footballers to a Leinster final loss to Kildare, before family commitments saw him take time out from the intercounty scene, although he did coach New Ross town side, Geraldine O’Hanrahans, to a county junior title two years ago.

O’Brien, known as an astute manager, still has to decide on his backroom team.

HURLING-SHINTY:Westmeath's Eoin Price has been named as the captain of the Ireland team ahead of the senior hurling-shinty internationals later this month.

The 24-year old Clonkill clubman was handed the role by the new joint management team of John Meyler and Michael Walsh, after the squad had their final trial in Athy on Saturday morning.

The panel is set to be named later this week for the Annual games against Scotland which will take place in Inverness on October 20th and Cusack Park Ennis on October 27th.

The 18-man squad will include at least four players from top-ranking Liam MacCarthy Cup tier counties, with Kilkenny’s Tommy Walsh, Michael Rice and Jackie Tyrrell and Tipperary duo Eoin Kelly and Brendan Maher among those involved in the recent past.

LAOIS:This season's Laois football final will be contested between Portlaoise and Arles Kilcruise on October 21st.

In yesterday’s semi-final, Portlaoise hammered St Joseph’s, 2-17 to 0-4, at O’Moore Park – Paul Cahillane with Bruno McCormack scoring the goals.

The first game was much closer, with Arles Kilcruise defeating O’Dempsey’s, 0-11 to 0-7.

DOWN:Mayobridge have earned a county senior football final place against Kilcoo on October 21st, after a 4-15 to 1-10 victory over Longstone last night in Newry.

The goals for Mayobridge came from Conleth O’Hare (2), Barry Garvey and Ryan Brady, with Micheal Ireland getting one for Longstone.
