It was widely believed Aidan O’Brien’s 2,000 Guineas and dual Derby winner would head for the Ladbrokes St Leger without having another run, but the trainer has given him the option of the premier trial for the final Classic of the season.

A total of 43 entries were received for the race, with O’Brien’s options stretching into double figures, but there are a number of other interesting horses in the race. They include David Lanigan’s Derby runner-up Main Sequence, Henry Cecil’s pair of Thomas Chippendale and Noble Mission, who were first and second in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, and a strong squad for John Gosden.

La Collina is set to return to action in the next two months after suffering a setback in the Irish 1,000 Guineas. Trainer Kevin Prendergast reports the filly to have recovered from the problem she had following her sixth-placed effort in the Curragh Classic.

The Co Kildare handler has yet to firm-up plans, but is considering stepping her up in trip at some stage. “She came back slightly sore after the Curragh. It wasn’t too good but she’s back in good shape again now,” said Prendergast.

“We just haven’t laid out any plans for her, but you’ll see her out probably in the next couple of months. She might start back at a mile then we might stretch her a bit. Her second dam won an Irish Oaks, so she might get a trip.”

Shirocco Star could continue what has already been a most productive season in the Darley Irish Oaks at the Curragh on July 22nd.

Although Hughie Morrison’s filly has not won this season, she was placed in an Oaks trial at Newbury and was beaten just a neck by Was in the Classic at Epsom.

She ran with great credit again on her most recent start when third behind Princess Highway in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Andrew Oliver is considering the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cherry Hinton Stakes at Newmarket’s July meeting for his unbeaten juvenile Sendmylovetorose.

The Bahamian Bounty filly travelled for the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot but became upset in the stalls and was withdrawn down at the start. That incident appeared to have little effect as she was a comfortable winner of a Group Three at the Curragh on Sunday. “She did it well. Going into the race there were quite a few unknowns with the travel and the episode with the stalls, but she put it all behind her and it was straightforward,” Oliver said.
