DONCASTER'S meeting which kicks off the Flat turf season in Britain is usually a forgettable affair, with few runners bar the Lincoln winner remembered much after Easter. But today it may be worth banking on Nwaamis to make his class tell in the Stone Bitter Doncaster Mile.

For Nwaamis promises to be `a' name to follow in 1996. The colt started last season with Classic aspirations, having created a very favourable impression in winning his only two year old start.

He followed a close third in the Craven Stakes last April with an excellent fifth behind Pennekamp in the 2,000 Guineas on just his third racecourse appearance.

Nwaamis looked sure to pay his way in Pattern races but finished down the field in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and sustained a pelvic injury which ruled him out for the remainder of the season. The good news is that reports from his trainer John Dunlop's Arundel base suggest he has made a full recovery.

Today's race conditions favour him as he is without a win outside maiden company and Dunlop looks to have found the ideal opportunity for Nwaamis to make a winning start to his four year old career. Penny Drops could be the best bet for the forecast despite a tendency to need her first race of, the year.

Carlito Brigante could well notch a family success in the Faucets for Mira/Rada Domestic and Commercial Shower Equipment Ladies' Handicap.

The four year old, ridden by Emma Ramsden for her stepmother Lynda, certainly appears well treated in this 28 runner race. He ended 1995 with a fine second in a similarly big field at York and reappears on a mark only 1lb higher.

Manolete may prove the best bet over jumps at Wincanton in the Quantock Handicap Hurdle. The five year old has won at Warwick and Fakenham since joining Merrita Jones and lost nothing in defeat by Hawthorne Glen at, Towcester last time. He can maintain his rapid rate of improvement today.
