BASKETBALL: The sole ESB Superleague action over Christmas saw Notre Dame record an away win over Killarney in a game that turned out to be significant for a number of reasons. Ian O'Riordan reports.

The result moved Notre Dame into joint third in the league table and maintained a winning streak that has suddenly established them as genuine title contenders.

The Dublin club takes to the road again this weekend, facing Limerick tomorrow evening.

A win here would certainly reinforce Notre Dame's title ambitions, but Limerick are also at full strength with their top-scorer, Cleotis Brown, returning from a break in the US just in time to make the starting line-up.

For the Tralee Tigers the pre-Christmas season brought little joy, but that seems set to change with the introduction of their new player - 6ft 3in guard Antoine Gillespie.

The headline game in Dublin this weekend is the meeting of St Vincent's (aka ITP Saints) and Killester.

Jerome Westbrooks is finally ready to play his first game of the season for Killester, but St Vincent's were marginally more consistent prior to Christmas and still look capable of taking the points.

For Neptune, the league leaders, the game against Killarney on Sunday shouldn't cause too much sweat. The Kerry club is still struggling to find their feet and the defeat to Notre Dame over Christmas can't have helped team morale.

In the women's Superleague, the University of Limerick can continue to dominate when they face Meteors tomorrow.

With a full squad and pole position in the league table the confidence within the Limerick side continues to grow, though the Wildcats and Tolka Rovers do continue to breath ominously down their backs.
