One of the Ireland's oldest golf tournaments was played at Tuam golf club last week. The County Galway Trophy which was first played in 1927, the same year that the Ryder Cup commenced, had its largest ever entry with 11 of the county's clubs taking part. The victory went to the host club, who were recording their 15th victory in the 72-year history of the event. The format was a team of 10 with the best seven cards to count. Consistency proved the key for the Tuam team who were captained by Jarlath McHugh. In the end it came down to a break of a tie after Tuam and last year's winners Portumna tied on 518 with Tuam winning on the eighth card. This year's event also saw three new clubs - Dunmore, Curragh West and Connemara Isles, who finished third - making their debuts.
