Munster Musings

I've certainly watched all their games and it's been a tremendous achievement. What has impressed me most about this team is the way the young players such as Peter Stringer and Ronan O'Gara have come through and subsequently been elevated to the Irish side.

They have also displayed some fantastic team spirit. You look at Mick Galwey and you have to admire the superb job he's done as captain. And he epitomises everything that is good about the game.

I believe that they have a great chance of winning the thing outright. I'm no expert on rugby but they've showed some tremendous ability all season. Northampton are nothing special and to win a European Cup would be great for Munster rugby and great for the country as well.

O'Gara's try in France sums up their whole season, with some fantastic speed work. It shows again that fortune favours the brave and that attitude of never say die can only be an inspiration to any team.

They've won matches in all different manners and especially when they win it late, you have to admire them. That shows incredible self-belief and is a lesson for any team.

We'll be playing Kerry this afternoon in the first round of the Munster championship so I won't get to see a whole lot of the game live.

But I'm looking forward to hearing the right result.

Reaching this final is right up at the top of Irish sporting success, similar to say the Irish soccer team under Jack Charlton or even Cork's own double in 1990. Of course Ulster did it last year, which makes it all the more incredible.

The team is blessed with some truly world class players like Keith Wood, but most of all they have this tremendous spirit, that's been their number one strength. And all the halfbacks are able to play some superb rugby. But you have to give a lot of credit as well to Declan Kidney. He is superbly well organised and has a great track record in this game at schools level, under-19 and so on.

Most of the experts are predicting Munster as favourites and to be honest that does worry me slightly. They have been the underdogs all along and I'd almost be happier if Northampton were at full strength. Nick Beal is a huge loss for them but they can't be under-estimated.

Maybe things are going too well for Munster at the moment but I'm sure Declan Kidney will have it all covered. They do have a great chance and I'm sorry I won't be there, but I'll be watching closely on television.
