THE Munster team to meet Wasps in the Heineken European Cup at Thomond Park tomorrow will be announced this afternoon. Initially it had been hoped to name the side last night, but the selection has been delayed for fitness checks on four players.
They are flanker Eddie Halvey (ankle), flanker Anthony Foley (chest), wing Brian Begley (shoulder) and prop Ian Murray (hand).
The Munster side returned to Cork from Cardiff yesterday morning and then assembled in Limerick yesterday evening. The good news for Munster is that Ireland flanker David Corkery (leg injury) is expected to be fit. He and Halvey were ruled out of Munster's two European Cup engagements to date but joined the squad yesterday evening.
Foley sustained the injury against Cardiff on Wednesday night and left the field just after half time and Begley also had to go off in the closing stages. Tight head prop Noel Healy, who had been selected against Cardiff, was a late withdrawal from the team because of a family commitment.
It is likely that the team will show several alterations from the side that lost to Cardiff. Halvey and Corkery will certainly return to the side, fitness permitting, and John Fitzgerald and Healy are likely to come in at prop forward.
Munster manager Colm Tucker said that they had hoped to finalise the side last night but added: "We are waiting on the medical reports. We did not want to name a team and then have to make changes in it."
Wasps make one change in their side from the team that lost to Cardiff last Sunday. Shane Roiser is named on the left wing in place of Lawrence Scrase. Va'aiga Tuigamala, on short term contract from Rugby League club Wigan and the former All Black wing, is named in the centre.
The side includes five internationals from five different countries, Tuigamala, Canadian outside half Gareth Rees, Welsh international and Lions prop Mike Griffiths, who was in the Cardiff side that lost in the final last season, the Scotland and Lions second row Damien Cronin and England back row Lawrence Dallaglio.
Former international prop Tom Clancy, who was out of action for much of last season be cause of injury, is recalled to the Connacht side to meet Northampton at the Sports Ground tomorrow in the European Conference.
The inclusion of Clancy is one of four changes in personnel and a positional alteration from the team that gave a disappointing display against Dunvant in Wales on Wednesday night.
The only change in the back line is the return at scrum half of Conor McGuinness for Diarmuid Reddan. In the pack, Clancy replaces John Maher at loose head prop Barry Browne is at hooker for Bill Mulcahy and Mark Reilly is named on the blind side flank while Rory Rogers switches to the open side for Kevin Devlin. Rogers takes over the captaincy from Devlin.
