RACING NEWS ROUND-UP:STAN MOORE has warned punters to ignore Lady Darshaan in the StanJames.com 1,000 Guineas at their peril at Newmarket on May 2nd. Last seen finishing second in the Fillies' Mile to Godolphin's new recruit Hibaayeb, she had earlier finished third in the Cherry Hinton.
After a week of Classic trials that threw up more questions than answers, Moore is pleased he took the decision to send his filly straight to Newmarket.
“Lady Darshaan has come on well and did a nice piece of work over at Richard Hannon’s place on Saturday morning,” said Moore.
“It is great that Richard lets us do that and she might go back over there one more time – maybe on Sunday – and then it will be straight to the Guineas from there.
“We have been a little bit behind because of the weather but the way she worked, I think there is every chance she will be in good form come the Guineas.
“She has done fantastic and although she is not 100 per cent at this moment, she is not far off it. She will be there with a fighting chance. I think she is the forgotten filly.”
One of the trials, the Fred Darling at Newbury, was won by Ralph Beckett’s Puff, who is to be aimed at Newmarket. The Whitsbury trainer admitted being surprised she stayed the seven furlongs so well at the weekend. “I felt there was none keener through the early part of the race and she looked like she outstayed them,” he said.
“That was something I was not expecting, that’s for certain. There was nothing in her pedigree that said she would get seven, never mind a mile, but she clearly outstayed them on Saturday.
“We look like we are going to Newmarket and if the ground’s fast that would be on our side.” Just behind Puff at Newbury was Ed Dunlop’s Habaayib.
Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum’s filly won the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot last summer and was second in the Cherry Hinton before a lacklustre display in the Cheveley Park. However, connections were thrilled with her reappearance in only going down by a neck, especially as she was taken across the track by the winner.
“I thought she ran a great race and we are going to leave her in the Guineas,” said Angus Gold, the owner’s racing manager.
“We’ve also got Tabassum and Rumoush, but we’ve always thought Habaayib was a nice filly.
“She slightly lost her way last year, but it’s great to have her back, she has trained on and she stayed the trip well.”
Arcano is to miss the StanJames.com 2,000 Guineas after meeting with his first career defeat at Newbury on Saturday.
Brian Meehan’s colt had won the Prix Morny last season in an unbeaten juvenile campaign and much was expected of him this campaign. However, he was well beaten in the Greenham behind the Richard Hannon-trained duo of Dick Turpin and Canford Cliffs.
Owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum’s racing manager Angus Gold said: “He won’t run in the English Guineas and we’ll give him a bit longer.”
