ST ANDREW'S just hung on to defeat CBC in the first round of the Leinster Schools' Junior Cup at Williamstown yesterday after a tremendous late fightback by the Monkstown school.
Trailing 10-0 with four minutes left, CBC forced the penalty on the St Andrew's line. From the resulting forward charge, second row Stephen Kearns touched down and winger Derek Davis added the points to set up a tense and exciting finale.
As the match drifted into injury time, St Andrew's were forced to clear their line time and again until they infringed at a ruck near their 22. Davis stepped up to take the kick that could send the tie into a replay but it drifted narrowly wide.
Earlier, St Andrew's scored a fourth-minute penalty from outhalf Robert Smyth and a try by winger Barra Heavey, who picked up a stray CBC pass and sprinted 65 yards to score under the posts. Smyth added the conversion.
