Mondello attracts big entry for 24hour race

The weekend sees the return of the annual Citroen 2CV 24-hour race at Mondello Park

The weekend sees the return of the annual Citroen 2CV 24-hour race at Mondello Park. The event attracts a strong UK entry as this is a round of the British and Scottish championship.

There will be a grid of 38 2CVs with 152 drivers competing over 700 laps each over the new Intermediate Circuit.

Derek Bliss leads after four rounds from Royce Grey and Richard Dalton. Mondello owner Martin Birrane has entered a team which includes his son James and Formula Palmer Audi driver Damien Faulkner. John Kenny of 2FM teams with Formula Ford Zetec championship leader Neil Shanahan to raise money for the National Children's Hospital.

The race starts at 2 p.m. tomorrow and runs through the night to a 2 p.m. finish on Sunday. Each driver must drive for up to three hours at a time.

Sunday's Millar Oils National Autocross Championship at Ballinasloe has attracted over 60 entries, headed by Gordon Percy (Cloughjordan) at the wheel of his Kawasaki Special, Ger Brennan (Killarney) Chevrolet V8 Special, Cathal Hogan (Suckfield), plus nine Cullens from Carlow and eight members of the Driver Family from Wicklow.

Round five of the Midget Racing Car Club of Ireland championships will be held at Carne, Co Wexford, on Sunday.

The Championship motorcycle grasstrack races at Lough Muckno Leisure Park, Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, are being run by the Dundalk MCC. Two autotest events will be held in the northwest Cork area of Dunhallow. Tomorrow's event run by the Cork Motor Club will be held at the Super-Value car park in Kanturk, as part of the Kanturk Wild Boar Festival. On Sunday the Killarney and District MC hold an autotest at the Alps Electric car park in Millstreet, which is in aid of the Millstreet Youth Centre.

Following the take over of the Vickers-owned Rolls Royce/Bentley by Volkswagen-Audi, Ford has agreed in principle to buy the Cosworth Racing engine division of Cosworth's Engineering from Audi AG, Cosworth having previously been owned by Vickers.

Cosworth Racing will be wholly-owned by Ford and will continue to be based in Northampton, England.

Ford formed an association with Cosworth in 1967 to produce the Ford Cosworth DFV engine, which scored a Formula One debut victory, in a Lotus driven by Jim Clark in the Dutch Grand Prix of that year. The Ford Cosworth DFV engine went on to power 13 Formula One Championship winners and won 10 constructors titles, including 174 Grand Prix wins and 138 pole positions.

The Stewart Team use Ford Cosworth Zetec-R engines in World Championship racing, and customer spec engines are used by Minardi and Tyrrell.
