Glasgow Hawks fullback Glen Metcalfe has given Scotland's coach Jim Telfer a useful option for next month's internationals against Australia after his man-ofthe-match performance in Saturday's tour opening win in Melbourne.

Scotland launched their seven-match Australian tour with a 42-13 victory over minor state selection Victoria following their humiliating 51-26 Test loss to Fiji in Suva last Tuesday.

Metcalfe impressed with two tries and solid defence against the Victorians, while number eight and captain for the day, Stuart Reid, pushed his international claims.

Telfer said yesterday that Metcalfe had been "a find" and could prove useful in the Test team, while halfback Graham Burns also impressed.

The only problem for Telfer is that Test fullback Derrick Lee, was one of the few players to come out of the Fiji shambles with his reputation intact.

"I thought the team showed a fair amount of enterprise (against Victoria), especially at halfback and fullback," Telfer said.

"Glen is very sharp on his feet, very competitive, and I was quite impressed.

"He's a real find and if we use him (in the tests) he will be a useful player."

The Scots travel to Bathurst for their second game against New South Wales Country tomorrow before taking on NSW in Sydney next Saturday.

Scotland play the Wallabies in Sydney on June 13th and Brisbane on June 20th.
