(24) Tommy Haas(Germany) v (2) Roger Federer(Switzerland)
Form
HAVING had a disappointing nine months by his own exceptional standards since winning the US Open last year, Federer has roared back to form in the last couple of months. He won the Madrid Open and then completed his set of grand slams by collecting a first French Open title. Federer is on a 17-match winning streak.
Haas’ first Wimbledon semi-final is an extension of his superb recent form. That near miss against Federer at the French was followed by his first title for two years on grass at Halle.
Past meetings
HAAS and Federer have met 11 times previously with the Swiss winning nine of those matches, including the last eight. Haas has often troubled Federer, though, taking him to five sets at the Australian Open in 2006 and then in the fourth round at the French Open this year – their first meeting for two years. The German was two sets up but Federer fought back to triumph in five and went on to win the title.
(3) Andy Murray (Scotland) v (6) Andy Roddick (USA)
Form
MURRAY made it 10 wins in a row on grass with victory over Juan Carlos Ferrero yesterday, having picked up his first title on the surface at Queen’s last month. That was the Scot’s fourth title of a year in which he has climbed to number three in the world.
Roddick is enjoying his best year since 2006, reaching the Australian Open semi-finals and winning the title in Memphis.
Past meetings
MURRAY’S record against Roddick will certainly give him confidence. The pair have met eight times before, with the British number one winning six of those matches. The first came back in 2006 in San Jose, where Murray collected his first ATP Tour title, and he then beat Roddick in the third round of Wimbledon in the same year.
Roddick’s first win came in their third meeting of 2006 in Cincinnati and he also won in Memphis in 2007. Since then Murray has won all four matches, most recently in the final in Doha, when he triumphed 6-4 6-2.
