IRELAND'S top junior athletes made their traditional trip to the AAA Junior Championships in Bedford and notched up a haul of four gold medals. Star performer was UCD's Jamie Costin, who took the 10 kilometre walk in 44 minutes 55.20 seconds, finishing more than two laps ahead of his nearest rival.

Kilkenny's Rosa LeighComerford followed suit shortly afterwards, taking the women's five kilometre walk in 24:40.20.

UCD's James Nolan had to work hard for the 800m title. He was looking set for second place until Tom Lerwill stumbled 10 metres from the line and Nolan outdipped his English opponent to win in 1:49.95.

The gold medal haul was completed by Tullamore hammer thrower John Thompson, who threw 57.54 metres to finish more than a metre ahead of the rest of the field and Dublin Harriers' Andrew Walker who took gold in the 1,500m in 3:47.21.
