NEWS:THE VICTORIOUS All-Ireland Under-21 manager Anthony Cunningham looks set to be the new Galway hurling boss following the resignation of John McIntyre yesterday.
The former double All-Ireland senior winner is the favourite to take charge after guiding Galway to the Under-21 crown last weekend, with his management team of former All-Star Tom Helebert and Mattie Kenny also set to make the step up.
He is also manager of Garrycastle in Westmeath and formerly led St Brigid’s of Roscommon to the Connacht title.
McIntyre decided not to pursue a fourth year in charge following the All-Ireland quarter-final loss to Waterford.
Yesterday, Cunningham, who captained Galway to the 1983 All-Ireland minor title and the under-21 crown in ’86, confirmed he would be going forward for the senior job.
“I am interested in putting my name forward for the Galway manager’s job, but we will be going forward as a management team en bloc. Mattie Kenny and Tom Helebert, as coaches, have done an excellent job all year. We would be interested in standing.”
