Paul McGrath began life as an English first-division player yesterday, by leaving with Sheffield United for a five-game, preseason tour of Norway. Earlier, he agreed a one-year contract with the Yorkshire club after his proposed move to West Ham had run into difficulties.
Harry Redknapp, West Ham's manager, was the first to make contact with McGrath following his release by Derby County at the end of last season, but with talks well-advanced, their interest suddenly dwindled last Friday.
Since he left St Patrick's Athletic to join Manchester United in 1982, McGrath has not been out of the top grade in England. However, before departing on the Norwegian tour, he said he was happy with the move.
"After missing out so narrowly on promotion in recent seasons, Sheffield United see this as the season in which they will finally make in into the Premiership and they have offered me an important part in those plans. Another big factor is that, with the agreement of the club, I will continue to live in Manchester."
