Ulster 3-11 Munster 1-15:ULSTER SECURED back-to-back Martin Donnelly Interprovincial titles when full back Neil McGee grabbed the winning goal two minutes from time at the Morgan Athletic Grounds in Armagh yesterday afternoon.
It was hugely entertaining game played in front of almost three thousand supporters and both managers were in no doubt afterwards that it’s a competition that is well worth continuing.
“It’s a great competition and the players love playing in it, it’s great for developing players,” said Ulster boss Joe Kernan.
Munster manager Ger O’Sullivan was also in full support of the competition. “I think the supporters enjoyed it and hopefully the heads can come together and we can sit down and give it a proper chance at a proper time of the year. If we can do that then it can go from strength to strength.”
There was nothing between the two sides throughout and after 20 minutes it was 0-5 each, with Mulligan hitting a couple of quality scores for Ulster and Tubridy and Hurney replying for Munster. As Brennan and Scanlon began to get on top in midfield the visitors moved a couple of points in front thanks to Tubridy and Kerrigan but Ulster pegged them back with Hughes converting a 45.
In the 31st minute the first goal arrived when a clearance from McKeever went to Benny Coulter, who picked out Mark Poland with a superb pass and he rounded goalkeeper Alan Quirke to score.
Tubridy hit two late quality scores but it was Ulster who led 1-7 to 0-9 at the break.
Munster were the better side in the third quarter, with Tubridy and Kerrigan both scoring twice and Hurney also on target.
Ulster were struggling but they then got the perfect boost when Coulter pulled the ball back from the end line for Peter Harte to hit it soccer-style it to the net to level matters.
Four minutes later Ulster goalkeeper Brendan McVeigh was picking the ball out of the net courtesy of a sweet finish from Munster substitute Rory Donnelly.
Quirke then pulled off a great save to deny Penrose, with Ulster captain Hughes converting the resulting 45.
With five minutes left the deficit was trimmed to the minimum margin when a flowing six-man moved resulted in Hughes taking a pass from Poland to point from play. Ulster now had a spring in their step and in the 68th minute they won the game. Joe McMahon, Brendan Donaghy, Harte and Karl Lacey were all involved in the move and there was fullback McGee to blast home in style to be an unlikely match-winner.
