Eddie McCormack gave himself the ideal boost for the Irish Amateur Open at Royal Dublin this weekend when he won the Laytown and Bettystown Scratch Cup on Sunday. McCormack's 140 total for the Hibernia Steel sponsored 36-hole event left him one ahead of Ricky Elliott (Royal Portrush) with Mick McGinley (Grange) three shots back on 144. McCormack shot an opening 68 to be one shot behind Elliott after the first round. However a second round 72 to Elliott's 74 saw the Slieve Russell player home by one shot. In a three-way tie on 141 for the nett prize, local Jack McAvinue won on a countback from John Gannon (Co Louth) and Morgan Pierce (Royal Dublin).
