NEWS ROUND-UPFORMER Waterford senior hurling manager Justin McCarthy has admitted his surprise at being nominated for the Limerick post but has refused to rule himself out of the running for the position.
McCarthy insisted he "didn't know anything" about his nomination by the Camogue Rovers club at Tuesday's Limerick County Board meeting and claimed he only discovered it later that evening when contacted by a friend. McCarthy said: "I didn't know anything about it. Nobody contacted me. A fella said it to me but I gave permission to nobody to put my name forward. I don't even know who nominated me."
McCarthy is one of the most high-profile names on the list released on Tuesday. Six of those put forward by various clubs have previous experience of senior county team management. They include McCarthy, (Waterford), Tony Considine (Clare), Pat Fleury (Offaly), Eddie Murphy (Kerry), Tom Ryan (Limerick) and Richie Bennis (Limerick). They are joined by Ciarán Carey, Pat Herbert, Brian Ryan and Gerry Molyneaux.
When asked if he would be interested in the position, McCarthy replied: "I haven't thought about anything like that. I'm training my own club Douglas at the moment and doing other bits and pieces."
Meanwhile, Richie Bennis, who was in charge for the past two and a half seasons, has confirmed he will go through the interview process as he looks to secure another season at the helm.
Meanwhile, Dublin County Board secretary John Costello has confirmed the intention to have a Dublin senior football manager installed by early November. "The county committee meeting is next Monday when we will discuss what procedures we will adopt to appoint a new manager," he said.
"In the past we've generally asked clubs to submit names for consideration by a select sub-committee, which would then be approved by the county committee.
"Obviously we'd like to get it done as swiftly as possible. October might be rushing it but we're looking at certainly no later than the start of November to have somebody in place."
