CYCLING: Day seven of the Herald Sun Tour in Australia brought mixed fortune for the Irish team, reports Shane Stokes. On the second of yesterday's two stages, David McCann placed eighth, 42 seconds behind winner Zbigniew Piatek of Poland.
However, Tommy Evans, who held a top-10 position last week, dropped to 13th after the ninth stage and then to 27th after the 10th stage. McCann is the best placed of the Irish, 24 minutes and 59 seconds behind overall leader Peter Wrolich of Austria. The tour continues today with a 120-kilometre race starting and finishing in Ballarat.
SQUASH: Ireland won through to the knockout stage and a tie against fourth seeds Canada at the World Team squash championships in Melbourne when they beat Hong Kong 3-0 yesterday. Derek Ryan overcame Faheen Khan in Ireland's opener 9-1, 5-9, 2-9, 9-1, 9-0. Liam Kenny defeated Vincent Cheug 9-6, 9-5, 9-4, and Steve Richardson beat Royen Ngu 9-3, 9-1, 9-4. Top seeds Australia beat Norway 3-0 to head the group while Ireland were second.
