Mc Henry burns it up too late

SOUTH AFRICAN Wayne Westner shot a final round 65 to win the Wild Coast Challenge yesterday, his second win in as many weeks

SOUTH AFRICAN Wayne Westner shot a final round 65 to win the Wild Coast Challenge yesterday, his second win in as many weeks. But it was John McHenry, the Cork professional, and Cameron Beckman who produced the best rounds of the day with scorching six under par 64s.

Unfortunatley for McHenry it was not enough to put him up among the big money winners as he finished two over par for the 72 holes after firing a six over par 76 in the third round on Saturday. Yesterday, though, he got to grips with the problem of blocking right on his drives as he notched up seven birdies in a round marred by only one bogey at the par three fourth.

"I was much happier with my game today because it all came together at once," he said. "My putting has been pretty good over the last few weeks but my driving has driven me to distraction. I seem to have been getting ahead of the ball so I have had to concentrate on staying behind it."

Mike Christie shot a final round 66 to share second place with fellow-American Greg Petersen on 272 while South Africans Retief Goosen, Ian Palmer and Chris Williams were joint fourth on 273.

"I played steadily and finished really well, although it was much easier to finish like that with a three-shot lead," said Westner. "I only made one mistake on the front nine when I three-putted on six. But the putts weren't dropping on the back nine I lipped out on 11, hit another good putt on 12 and, if any of those had dropped, it would have been much easier."

McHenry's next stop on the South African Tour is a Pro Am at Lost City where he will be joined by fellow Irishmen, Eamon Darcy, Ronan Rafferty, Philip Walton, Des Smyth, Raymond Burns and David Higgins.
