UNDER-21 FOOTBALL CONNACHT FINAL:NEIL DOUGLAS sealed Sligo's fate with a golden goal at the start of the second half of this one-sided decider at Markievicz Park on Saturday. The Breaffy club man pounced with less than a minute on the clock to power the visitors into a nine-point lead, 2-10 to 1-4, and put them well on their way to a fourth provincial title on the trot.
Superbly led by midfielder Aidan O’Shea, the visitors were far too good for Sligo who led for a few minutes at the start of the first half thanks to a couple of Stephen Coen points, but the visitors took control thereafter. Sligo were given a faint glimmer of hope after 18 minutes when Coen blasted a penalty past Robert Hennelly to leave just two points between the sides but a 23rd-minute goal by Jason Doherty set the champions up for a 1-10 to 1-4 interval lead.
Mayo scored 2-4 in the second half while all Sligo could muster was four points. The visitors finished with a flourish when Michael Sweeney fisted the ball to the net.
