Maylane on best behaviour

Troublesome Maylane displayed the better side of his nature to secure his first victory in more than two years

Troublesome Maylane displayed the better side of his nature to secure his first victory in more than two years. Michael Roberts, back on board for the first time since being dumped by the Alec Stewart-trained gelding at Ascot two years ago, coaxed him home by half-a-length from Muhib in the Lucent Wavelan Stakes.

The former champion has been the pilot for all five wins for Maylane who throughout his career has made misbehaving his number one pursuit.

Roberts has twice been dumped by Maylane who on numerous occasions has consented to race only after his rivals have travelled five lengths and more.

"I've never ridden one as good as him that's behaved as badly as him," said the jockey. "Today though he got away with out losing too much ground."

Caxton Lad, a non-stayer over six furlongs last time, made the most of the drop to the minimum trip with a five-length victory in the Haydock Park Sponsorship Club Nursery.
