NFL DIVISION THREE Sligo 1-12 Roscommon 0-12:ADRIAN MARREN pounced for a crucial goal for Sligo at the end of a riveting first half at Markievicz Park yesterday.

The teams were tied at six points apiece entering the closing seconds of added time when Mark Brehenys crossfield ball was blasted to the Roscommon net by the Curry clubman.

John Rogers opened the first half scoring with a Roscommon point after 60 seconds and they had doubled their advantage when Marren got the Yeatsmen off the mark in the 10th minute.

The sides were level four times in the opening half with Sligo leading (1-6) to (0-6) at half-time.

Four points without reply put Sligo seven points ahead after six minutes of the second half but the home side failed to raise a flag for the next 14 minutes as a rejuvenated Roscommon added five points.

Roscommon had victory well within their grasp in the closing stages but Sligo rallied to hold out for a hard-earned win.

“Sligo gave us trouble with their running game,” said Roscommon boss Des Newton who felt the concession of the goal coupled with seven wides and not winning enough ball in the centre of the field cost his side.

Sligo manager Kevin Walsh was pleased with his teams performance and said they “were in the right frame of mind”.
