RACING:STYLISH AMATEUR rider Gerry Mangan is back in action having yesterday been passed fit to ride. He was out of saddle since breaking his ankle in a fall from Big Shu in the Joseph O'Reilly at Fairyhouse.
Mangan explained: “I am after getting passed there today. I’m out since the 10th of April. I broke my ankle but I got the all clear there today, thank God. I got injured in a hunter chase at Fairyhouse. I’ve been riding out there for Tom Cooper for a while – getting back in the swing of things.
“I’m back in one piece now so hopefully I’ll get a few spins (on the track in the summer). I might even be riding next weekend, I’m not sure yet.
Sheikh Mohammed’s Blue Corner will run next at Fairyhouse on July 15th. The once-raced Teofilo colt won a 10-furlong maiden at the Curragh in May by five lengths and was supplemented for the International Stakes last weekend by his trainer Michael Halford.
However, the very soft ground prevented the three-year-old from appearing with Halford content to wait for more suitable terrain.
“He’ll go for a conditions race at Fairyhouse on the 15th,” said Halford. “I just didn’t want to risk him on the ground they had at the Curragh. He wants it decent and it was a long way from decent at the weekend. He might have been supplemented and some owners would maybe have wanted to run, but with Sheikh Mohammed the horse’s welfare always comes first and it wouldn’t have been right to run him.”
David Marnane is hoping to plunder another big prize with Jamesie in next month’s Blue Square Bet Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood.
Big wins in recent seasons for Dandy Boy in the Victoria Cup and Wokingham and Santo Padre and Nocturnal Affair in the Portland have advertised Marnane’s skills.
Jamesie himself narrowly lost out in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and may head to Newmarket before Goodwood, with the Bunbury Cup in his sights.
“We might run Jamesie in the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket next week, but the Stewards’ Cup is certainly on his agenda,” said Marnane.
