Week 17 brought very mixed blessings to Dublin manager Brian O'Callaghan.
Ahead of the British Open, his Leftie's Lightweights were 36th in the overall standings. However they included David Howell whose injury seems to be turning from the niggly to the long-term variety; Greg Owen who was excluded from the field for St Andrews; and Arjun Atwal who played well in the BC Open but the BC Open was not a Golf Masters event.
O'Callaghan declined to use either of his remaining transfers and the result was a drop to 78th for the Lightweights. Up to now his only other team, Mannan Maestros, has been very much makeweights. He made two unsuccessful transfers in week three and forgot about them as the fell to 7,952nd overall. But as often happens at this stage of the season, a weak team flexes its muscle and the Maestros garnered a540,000 at St Andrews to win our weekly prize of a fourball at Druids Heath.
They did it without the help of Tiger Woods who appeared on only four of the teams on the weekly leaderboard. The Maestros had Colin Montgomerie (a160,000 for second), Fred Couples and Jose Maria Olazabal (a130,000 each for tied third) plus Nick Faldo and Graeme McDowell (a60,000 each for tied 11th).
There is bonus money this week at the Deutsche Bank Players Championship of Europe and regular money at the US Bank Championship.
