MICK MADIGAN hit a late winner as Waterford's Bohemians took the FAI Junior Cup with a win over Mungret Regional in Tipperary Town yesterday. The goal capped a stirring comeback by the Waterford side.
Madigan, a former League of Ireland star, broke Mungret hearts with only seven minutes remaining. A Michael O'Connell throw-in found its way to Damian O'Loughlin and he flighted it into Madigan's path. Madigan's driven shot from the edge of the six-yard box flew past Colm Barratt in the Mungret goal.
Things had looked bleak for the Waterford team at half-time when they trailed 1-0. After a poor opening period, Mungret snatched the advantage in injury time when Packie McNamara headed home from a cross. The Limerick side had previously missed a penalty.
Unlikely though it may seem, the same fate befell Bohemians when they were awarded a second half spot-kick. The memory of that miss was soon forgotten, however, when David Whittle crashed the ball home for the equaliser. That strike set up Madigan's fitting finale.
