Nineteen-year-old Loughrea claimer Mark Madden was the toast of Tramore yesterday when completing a spectacular 6,170 treble, highlighted by an assured ride on Hakkinen in the featured Huzzar Vodka Handicap Chase.
Madden held up the Austin Leahy-trained eight-year-old in rear for much of the three mile £12,000 event, closing up behind the leaders into the dip approaching the second last. Hakkinen struck the front at the last and was driven out to beat the 6 to 4 favourite Inis Cara by three-quarters of a length.
Leahy was full of praise for the jockey saying: "Mark is riding with a lot of confidence. We may go next for a two and a half mile race at Wexford later this month."
Madden initiated his treble with a bang when 50 to 1 chance Village Rosheen - the middle leg of a 3,926 to 1 treble for trainer Pat Fahy - took the Cork Dry Gin EBF Mares Maiden Hurdle. The daughter of Roselier led on the run-in for a three- quarter length success from Monty's Fancy.
Madden, who has now recorded nine career wins, was also seen to good effect aboard Felicity's Pride in the Jameson Handicap Hurdle. Ben Lawlor's mare appreciated the three-mile stamina test, staying on gamely up the final hill to beat Half Barrell by a length and a half.
Leighlinbridge-based Fahy was also on the mark with Prince Of Erin in the opening Hot Powers Maiden Hurdle, and his Kirmar emerged from a thick mist in the concluding Huzzar Flat Race to beat Dawn's Double by two and a half lengths.
Celtic Arms, winner of the French Derby for Pascal Bary in 1994, has been found dead in his stallion box at Le Station des Etalons stud farm in France.
It is believed he may have fractured his skull.
His win in the Prix du JockeyClub, when he finished strongly to beat Solid Illusion and Alriffa, was the highlight of his career which also included a victory in the Prix Lupin earlier that season.
The son of Comrade In Arms was sent to race in the United States after his three-year-old campaign, where he gained Grade Two wins in the Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup Handicap and the Pan American Handicap.
His first crop are yearlings this year.
