July 1992: Meets Erik de Bruin.
September 1994: Finishes fifth in 200m butterfly at World Championships.
1995: Sets Irish records in 50m, 100m, 400m and 800m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 100m and 200m butterfly, 200m and 400m medley. Wins short-course World Cup series. Ranked world number one in 200m butterfly over short course, sixth in 100m butterfly and seventh in 200m medley. Made sporting history by becoming first Irishwoman to win a European title in 200m butterfly and individual medley after finishing second in 400 medley.
1996: Marries de Bruin. Hits number one in world 400m freestyle rankings with time of 4:08 a day after Olympic qualification date. Becomes first Irish competitor to land an Olympic swimming medal when she wins 400m medley and follows up with gold in the 400m freestyle and a third gold in the 200m individual medley at Atlanta in July. Took bronze in 200m butterfly.
1997: Wins two gold medals and two silver medals at the European Championships in Seville, Spain.
