Rain did not dampen the fire of Glenanne or Pembroke Wanderers in hockey's Leinster Senior League at St Mark's on Saturday but again it was Pembroke's greater resources in midfield which earned them a 3-2 win and a return to the top of the table with Three Rock Rovers and Avoca.

Pembroke scored through Simon Kershaw and Paudie Carley from short corners to take 1-0 and 2-1 leads and it was a searing surge by Devin Donnelly which really decided the issue. Glenanne, though, refused to throw in the towel. First Stephen Butler sent John Goulding clear to equalise and then, at 1-3, Butler beat Nigel Henderson from a set-piece switch with Paul Fitzpatrick before dragging a corner barely wide in the last minute.

A rare scoreless draw materialised between Corinthians and Three Rock Rovers at White church Park where a key factor was attentive defending by Peter Darley and Cormac Byrne for the home side and by Shane Davy and Alan Bothwell for Rovers.

YMCA, now finding their shape with former Belgian under-21 international Greg Von Tierdonk in a pivotal role, gained their first win of substance in beating Aer Lingus 3-1 in the initial round of the Mills Cup at ALSAA. Dave Bane had put the airport side ahead but goals by Michael Fry (2) and Mark Vincent sent YM through to meet Glenanne.
