British Open: Dubliner Peter Lawrie will make his debut in the British Open Championship at St Andrews in two weeks time after yesterday's qualifying rounds at Sunningdale.
Lawrie, the European Tour's rookie of the year in 2003, had rounds of 65 and 67 for an eight under par total of 132, while Simon Khan, the golfer fined a record €8,000 for slow play at the Irish Open last month, celebrated the birth of his first child two weeks ago with two 66s to join Lawrie at the top of the leaderboard.
Gary Murphy, however, won't be joining Lawrie at St Andrews. The Kilkenny man shot a 73 in the first round and was disqualified in second round. Ian Woosnam thought he had blown it by missing a four-foot putt on the last green, but then breathed a sigh of relief when told he was in on six under par.
For the second year running however, Spain's Jose Maria Olazabal failed to make it through the qualifying tournament.
And now the only way he has of being part of the St Andrews action in two weeks' time is to be the leading non-exempt player at Loch Lomond next week. The double US Masters champion had rounds of 70 and 69 for a one under par total of 139.
Five players will play-off this morning for the one remaining place from Sunningdale.
Meanwhile, Justin Rose had a tough task on his hands to make St Andrews after a first-round 72 in the American qualifier at Canoe Brook .
Rose, yet to play in Europe this season, was eight adrift of pacesetter Tom Pernice (64) and not in the top 60. Only 14 qualified after the second round.
Bernhard Langer was better placed following a 69, while the leading European was his fellow German Alex Cejka. He shot 67 to be in joint seventh position.
